QUICK FACTS
The capital and largest city of Spain is known for offering a great variety of culture. Its great and elegant boulevards and the famous gold triangle guard Spanish art masterpieces of Vélazquez and Goya among others. It is the political centre of Spain, and one of the most visited cities of the country with aprox. 3.5 m. inhabitants.
Madrid offers a diversity of style and atmosphere as each and every neighbourhood is different; it is fun just wandering around and exploring all the distinct areas.
MUST-SEES
As previously mentioned this city features tons of art and cultural sights. A must visit is to the Golden Triangle, including the ‘Museo del Prado’, ‘Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía’ and the ‘Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza’. All these museums are located in the same area and have famous art works from Dalí, Miró, Velázquez, Goya and Picasso.
Visiting such a big city, moments of relaxation might be needed. You can do this best in the Retiro park, a large park with a diversity of areas, including exhibition venues, little bars, the Garden of Roses and a little lake where people can rent small wooden boats and paddle around in the sun.Street musicians can increase this relaxation when playing saxophone or the harp.
TRIP-TIPS
Madrid has many different markets, of which El Rastro is the most famous. It is the biggest flea market in Madrid, set-up alongside Plaza de Cascorro and Ribera de Curtidores, between Calle Embajadores and Ronda de Toledo. The market starts on Sunday from 9am until the afternoon. You will be amazed by all the diversity this market has to offer and even if you do not buy anything, there is enough to see and enjoy!
Apart from the flea market Madrid also offers a variety of daily food markets where you can find fresh fruit, fish, cheese, different types of meat and other products, varying in price and quality. Take ‘El Mercado de San Miguel’ for example. This indoor market can be found in the heart of the old part of Madrid since 1916. The market was renovated in 2009 and is since then even more popular amongst tourists.
ACCOMMODATION
With Madrid being the capital city of Spain, there are endless options to choose from when it comes to accommodation. You can select one of the trendy 5-star hotels such as ‘Hotel Puerta America’, a project on which 19 world famous architects have each designed one entire floor as a tribute to the world of architecture, design and liberty.
Do you prefer something smaller? Then opt for ‘Hotel Hospes Madrid’, a much smaller and historic building dating back to 1883.
GASTRONOMY
The kitchen of Madrid is one greatly appreciated by tourists as well as locals, and the city has the capacity to fulfil the needs and wishes of both parties with its rich offer of different restaurants and bars, that display the best of Madrid, and other parts of Spain and the world.
